SUMMARY MINUTES OF SPECIAL WORKSHOP DINNER MEETING

PRESENT:      Mayor Hall, Deputy Mayor McConnell, Councilmembers Chang, McGlashan, Robertson, and Scully

 

ABSENT:       Councilmember Roberts

 

STAFF:           Debbie Tarry, City Manager; John Norris, Assistant City Manager; Jim Hammond, Intergovernmental Program Manager, and Allison Taylor, Deputy City Clerk

 

GUESTS:        Senator Jesse Salomon, Representatives Lauren Davis and Cindy Ryu

 

At 5:53 p.m., the meeting was called to order by Mayor Hall. He welcomed Representative Ryu and explained that Senator Salomon and Representative Davis were delayed in traffic from Olympia. Representative Ryu shared details of her legislative work and explained how committees are formed and reworked. She recounted stories of her experiences in politics.

 

Representative Lauren Davis arrived at 6:05 p.m. She summarized her committee involvement and shared goals for the work she is involved in.

 

Senator Jesse Salomon arrived at 6:20 p.m. and was welcomed by Mayor Hall. Senator Salomon gave an update on his recent work and experiences as a new member of the Senate.

 

Discussion of the underutilized property on the Fircrest Campus began with suggestions of possible uses of the site and recognition of the need for affordable housing. It was clarified that the land in consideration is not in active use. The timeline for decision making was reviewed. Generally, it was agreed that the goal is to create affordable housing and dedicated community space.

 

At 6:40 p.m. Councilmember Scully moved to extend the meeting for 30 minutes, until 7:15 p.m. Deputy Mayor McConnell seconded the motion, which passed unanimously, 6-0.

 

The issues of commercial usage of space and traffic impacts associated with the Fircrest property redevelopment were discussed, as was the importance of communication of, and community involvement in, planning. The value of creating open spaces within the redevelopment and the importance of taking a comprehensive look at the impact on the broader neighborhood as part of the planning process were recognized.

 

At 7:01 p.m. Senator Salomon left the meeting.

 

Representatives Davis and Ryu reminded Council that Affordable Housing is a primary interest at the State level. They reiterated the value of partnership in decision making. The next steps and timeline for the Fircrest Campus property process were summarized.

 

Appreciation was expressed for the State-level support for Shoreline’s transportation budget needs and City Council’s Shoreline-Specific Interests for 2019 were reviewed. There was discussion of the competing needs for funding.

 

At 7:14 p.m. Deputy Mayor McConnell moved to extend the meeting for 15 minutes, until 7:30 p.m. Councilmember Chang seconded the motion, which passed unanimously, 6-0.

 

Conversation turned to a review of the key Bills of interest to Shoreline. Councilmembers briefly shared observations and opinions. Mayor Hall thanked the Representatives for their time.

 

At 7:30 p.m. the meeting adjourned.
