Dr. Jack Kahn, Shoreline Community College President, said he wants to position the College as a space to serve the community and believes the City’s goals align with this objective. He discussed updates on the new health sciences building and wayfinding for the whole campus. The new building was expected to open in fall but may be delayed due to issues with Seattle City Light providing power for the building. Concerns were expressed about the opening of the building and the possibility of having to send students to online classes again. Dr. Kahn expressed a preference to continue offering face to face classes to maintain accessibility to a variety of students. Councilmembers offered their assistance to support Seattle City Light electrifying the new building. Dr. Kahn said the College also aims to provide benefits for students to support food insecurity with the support of the 2023 MLB All-Star Legacy Initiative that the College recently received.
Samira Pardanani, Associate Vice President of International Education and Global Engagement, spoke about the international student program and the Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Grant for diversifying study abroad. She stated the College is one of 34 colleges in the country to receive the IDEAS grant and they plan to invest it in creating a nursing program for study abroad in Bolivia. While reviving the study abroad programs, the College is promoting global awareness for local students to prepare them for working in a multicultural environment.
Dr. Kahn highlighted that the College is looking for synergy opportunities to bring organizations into the campus that will benefit students. He spoke about the College's efforts to engage with local and international communities, and the possibility of turning the curriculum of educational community organizations into community college credits. Ms. Pardanani added that the College is working on increasing engagement between the city and international students through events, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
At 6:47 p.m., Mayor Scully declared the meeting adjourned.
