Parks Director Dick Deal introduced the topic along with Ros Bird, Public Art Coordinator, who provided an overview of public art in Shoreline including what’s currently installed in the City, both owned by the City and by other entities, art projects in progress, and future visions.

Ros Bird stated that public art makes a statement about how we see ourselves as a community and how we want others to view us.  It enhances the urban landscape by providing visual interest; it encourages creative capital, both human and financial resources; it creates economic vitality, especially cultural tourism; it provides magnets or gathering places; and it engenders pride of place.

Other added benefits of public art is that it can effect the surprise or “wow” factor and can be thought-provoking, reflective, and interactive.  It is often considered a catalyst for other creative opportunities and growth.
