SUMMARY MINUTES OF DINNER MEETING

PRESENT: Mayor Hansen, Deputy Mayor Jepsen, Councilmembers Chang, Fimia, Grace, Gustafson, and Ransom

ABSENT: none

STAFF: Steve Burkett, City Manager; Bob Olander, Deputy City Manager; Julie Modrzejewski, Assistant City Manager; and Joyce Nichols, Communications and Intergovernmental Relations Director

Mayor Hansen convened the meeting at 6:15 p.m.

Julie Modrzejewski, Assistant City Manager, presented information to Council on the details for the retreat on February 11, to be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pier 69 in Seattle. She summarized feedback she received from Councilmembers on topics for the retreat, including:

ways to make City Council meetings operate better;
a review of current Council goals;
revisiting the original vision developed in 1996; and
whether or not to have a facilitator for the retreat.

Council discussed these items and agreed to have a facilitator for the meeting and to pass along their feedback to the facilitator so he can put together the agenda for the meeting.

Joyce Nichols, Communications and Intergovernmental Relations Director, introduced the next topic – recommendations to Suburban Cities Association (SCA) for appointments to regional committees. She reviewed the committees involved, meeting days/times, and committee purpose. Council discussed the committee assignments and stated their preferences for assignments. Council will recommend the following to the SCA:

· Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) Executive Committee – Ron Hansen

· PSRC Transportation Policy Board – Bob Ransom

· PSRC Economic Development District Policy Board – John Chang

· Regional Water Quality Committee – Rich Gustafson

· Regional Transit Committee – John Chang

Councilmember Fimia handed out a letter to the Council regarding the King County Districting Committee’s deliberation on redrawing the King County Council District boundaries. She pointed out that the most recent map from the Committee has the district including Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, and part of Woodinville. The district also includes areas of Seattle all the way down to Green Lake. Councilmember Fimia urged the Council to look at the map, read her letter, and make sure the Districting Committee knows that we prefer to keep “communities of interest” together.

Deputy Mayor Jepsen said he provided testimony to the Committee along those same lines. He said if other Councilmembers feel the same way, the Mayor could send a letter to the Committee advocating for less of Seattle in the north district.

Mayor Hansen declared the meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
